I'm a product of K-12 public education. Fortunately, after high school, I had the opportunity to attend and complete college and graduate school. At one point in high school after seeing a real computer although a big one, I couldn't get the idea out of my mind that someday computers would play a central role in educating students in public education.
If you are of the generation that remembers watching Star Trek in the 70's then you know what I'm talking about, because not only was Star Trek entertaining, it was also visionary from a technology perspective and although at that time it was science fiction, deep in your heart you knew it had some truth to it. Little did we know that the truth wasn't too far away.
Today, we have the teachers, the professionals, the technology, the hardware, the software, the infrastructure, the know-how and the money to begin the process of re-inventing and transitioning our public schools as true community learning centers for all of our students. This process has not proceeded in a timely manner, because the ideas have been centered on "one size fits all". There have been so many research papers written on the topic and a lot of money spent to try this and to try that, but the ability to scale a "one size fits all" successful model for every student across K-12 public education has not been realized. In my opinion, I do not believe there is a possible "one size fits all" model. Instead, we should treat our students as life long learners, provide them with opportunities and the resources that will lead to future successes in concert with the community they live in as a co-partner whose participation is critical to the well-being of the schools and the community.
I don't think it is a matter of "Why?" I think its a matter of what is right. Not only is K-12 public education in the best interest of the students, but its also in the best interest of all of us and our nation! Each and every one of us are directly or indirectly connected to the successes or the failures of each other no matter what you might otherwise believe. For example, would you agree that the total costs of incarcerating all of the people who are currently jailed or in detention has had and is having a negative impact on their family's livelihood, the well-being of our citizenry and the health of our nation? What is the Wheel of Life?
Too many students are "left behind" because in time of need, those students for one reason or another do not find the help they need when the time arises. This is what we in public school refer to when we say, students "get lost" or "fall through the cracks". More...
